Among the important factors that make for successful growing, the use of a high quality medium is important; and this must be chosen to take account of the watering system used.
The choice of growing medium is of fundamental importance to successful growing. Today we have fast-growing varieties with a shorter growing cycle, we grow compact cyclamen, and we have all the different methods of irrigation; and all this makes greater and greater demands on the growing medium.
There are many good mediums currently on sale; and though the first consideration is frequently one of economy, there is never any excuse for failing to take into account the needs of the plants, the constraints of irrigation and fertiliser supply, and the technical competence and practices of the enterprise.
Based on these criteria the aim will be to choose the medium with the most suitable physical and chemical properties.
This advice sheet is based on the methods used at the SCEA at Montourey (Fréjus, France). These procedures may need some modification to adapt them to other climatic situations. Before starting to grow cyclamen there needs to be a review of precautions against pests and diseases. We must point out that our advice and suggestions are offered for information purposes and therefore cannot include any guarantee of specific results; it is a good idea to carry out trials beforehand.
